Author of The Heart Decided to Move, Chasing Harmony, Dream Signs, and The Modern Enneagram

Melanie Bell is a Canadian writer living in the UK. Her poetry collection,The Heart Decided to Move, is available here. Her YA novel, Chasing Harmony, is available from Read Furiously and was featured on CLMP’s list of Children’s and YA Books of 2022 and their 2025 Pride Month reading list. Her short story collection, Dream Signs, was originally published by Lost Fox Publishing, and a second edition is available here. The Modern Enneagram, coauthored with Kacie Berghoef, is available from Althea Press. Her novella “The Cliffman” was included in the literary horror collection Hard for Hope to Flourish, and one of her stories is featured in the Whispers in the Earth illustrated anthology of world folklore.

Melanie and Hannah Doyle co-wrote Joan: The Musical which was performed in the Brighton Fringe in May 2025. Her short plays have appeared onstage at the Tower Theatre and Barons Court Theatre in London, on Morley College Radio, and in Liverpool’s 24 Hour Play Fest.

Melanie’s fiction, poetry, and articles have appeared in venues such as Contrary Magazine, The Huffington Post, Cicada, Every Day Fiction, Grain, and The Fiddlehead. She has written columns for Autostraddle (Hidden Gems of Queer Lit) and Skirt Collective (Mini Mealtime Mondays, now offline).

Melanie has worked as an editor, university writing instructor, workshop facilitator, English as a Second Language teacher, freelance writer, and curriculum designer. She has led writing workshops and acted as a judge for literary awards and grants in the UK and Canada.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Leadership from the University of New Brunswick and a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Concordia University. She’s a certified teacher of the Enneagram, a personality typology focused on core motivations.
